Mark Zuckerberg announced the Facebook Dating feature at its annual F8 developer conference on Tuesday. Unveiled the new Facebook Dating feature designed to compete with popular dating app services like Tinder.

In front of a very big crowd in San Jose, Zuckerberg explained the new Facebook Dating feature. He explained it as a tool to create “real long-term relationships – not just hookups”.

“We want Facebook to be somewhere where you can start meaningful relationships. We’ve designed this with privacy and safety in mind from the beginning,”  – Zuckerberg said.

This Facebook Dating feature announcement comes at a strange time. Facebook has been dealing with the Cambridge Analytica data leak and questions of users privacy for months. But Mark said that the company will “keep building, even while we focus on keeping people safe”.

Facebook Dating Feature

Whatever, this dating feature will have a dedicated inbox. But you can’t send any photos when chatting with someone for the first time. You can only send text messages, unlike Facebook Messenger. Facebook described this as a safety measure.

A unique algorithm will be used to match you with potential dates, based on “dating preferences, things in common, and mutual friends”. Also, you would be able to find romantic interests via shared Groups and Events. For an example, if you are going to a movie, you’ll be able to “unlock” your profile. So that potential matches who have said that they’re also going to the same movie.

To keep users dating profile separate from the actual Facebook profile, only your first name will be used in a dating profile. The opt-in feature will match users with the people who are not friends. And users Facebook friends wouldn’t be able to see the dating profile of that user.

This Facebook dating feature is likely to be a free service. This will be a challenging services such as Match-owned Tinder, which is a paid feature, rolling out premium.

Is Facebook Dating Feature better than Tinder?

It’s hard not to instantly see that Dating looks shockingly similar to existing dating applications Tinder, Hinge or Bumble. Which implies that in one sense, Facebook is again searching for progress through imitation. It’s easy to expel Dating as Facebook replicating Tinder, just like copied Instagram Stories from Snapchat.

But an important reality is Dating applications like Tinder is depended on Facebook’s data to work their services. After signing up for those apps you can immediately pull your Facebook photos as well as other information like where you live, work etc. Even Tinder gets your friend list when you sign up for it. You can’t say whether these apps will exist or not without a social network.

A month ago Tinder was stopped working when Facebook changed its data-sharing policies. And now Tinder and other apps like it have competed with Facebook that is being used to operate by every dating app like Tinder.

Effect on Match Group for Facebook Dating Feature

The share price of Match Group, the company that owns dating sites like Tinder, OkCupid, and Match.com decreased by 18% after the announcement of Facebook Dating feature.

We’re flattered that Facebook is coming into our space—and sees the global opportunity that we do—as Tinder continues to skyrocket. We’re surprised at the timing given the amount of personal and sensitive data that comes with this territory,” Mandy Ginsberg, the CEO of Match Group, said. “Regardless, we’re going to continue to delight our users through product innovation and relentless focus on relationship success. We understand this category better than anyone. Facebook’s entry will only be invigorating to all of us”.

However, dating makes a perfect sense for Facebook. Facebook, the World’s largest social network is building its own Dating service. Just instead of allowing third-party applications to move users data. Facebook will start the testing of this dating feature later this year. And it’s not going to use information from this new feature for targeting ads.
