When we talk about SEO some meta tag comes out like doindex, dofollow, noindex, nofollow meta tags. When we are looking for SEO for our website, we must know about these meta tags  doindex ,dofollow, noindex and nofollow. In our previous post we talked about the process how to fix the Google search index coverage issues.  We discussed an issue of noindex, nofollow meta tags there.

And as I told you that if you have this issue with your site and you have received an Email from Google stating an index coverage issue with your site then you must have to fix this issue by changing these noindex, nofollow meta tags to doindex dofollow. So what are these tags and what do these tags do for our site and how? Hello guys, please don’t be worried because today in this post I am going to discuss these tags. So let’s begin.

noindex, nofollow meta tags

What are noindex, nofollow meta tags

Keep in mind that every webpage you create are by default with doindex meta tag that means every search engines crawler will crawl that web page and will show in the search result. That doindex tag directs all the search engines crawlers to crawl that web page and show it in search results.

What are doindex and noindex meta tags

<meta name="robots" content="noindex" />
The above example of meta tag instructs all the search engines crawlers not to crawl the web page that has this meta tag in the header section and not to show that page in search engines search results. The value of the name attribute (robots) specifies that directive applies to all crawlers. To address a specific crawler replace the robots value of the name attribute with that crawlers name which you don’t want to be crawling your web page. Specific crawlers are also known as user-agents. The standard web crawler of Google has the user-agent name Googlebot. So if you want to prevent only Google search engine crawler that is Googlebot from crawling your web page then you have to use the meta tag given below-
<meta name="googlebot" content="noindex" />

This tag instructs only Googlebot or Google search engine not to crawl or index the webpage though other search engines will crawl(index) your web page and will show that page in search results. Search engines may have different types of crawlers to crawl or index different types of web pages.
If you have a website that publishes news and if you want some news not to show in Google search results or not to crawl or index that specific pages news then you can use a meta tag given below in that web pages header section-
<meta name="googlebot-news" content="noindex" />

This value of name attribute Googlebot-news directs Google search engine not to crawl or index any news from that specific web page.

I hope you understood the working principle of these meta tags doindex and noindex. Now let me tell something about dofollow and nofollow meta tags.

What are dofollow and nofollow meta tags

Every link you create on your web page is with dofollow tag by default, that means all the search engines crawlers follow these links and make your web page rank higher. But if you need search engines not to follow any link from a specific webpage then you have to use the meta tag in that particular web pages header section is given below-
<meta name="robots" content="nofollow">

Also if you want to instruct search engines crawlers not to index a webpage as well as not to follow any links from that webpage then you need to use the following meta tag-
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">

Now let me tell you how to instruct search engines crawlers not to follow any specific link from a web page. Suppose you are showing another website’s link on your webpage and you don’t want to give that link as dofollow link then create the link as follows-
<a href="Link URL" rel="nofollow"> YOUR TEXT </a>
